Activity Ratings

Pilgrimage journeys typically involve significantly more walking than many people do in their daily routines. While there are regular breaks throughout each day, the itinerary remains quite active. We recommend wearing supportive, comfortable footwear and being prepared for extended periods of walking and standing. You should also anticipate uneven terrain and a greater number of stairs than you may normally encounter. Our activity rating scale provides an approximate indication of the average number of steps participants can expect to take each day during the pilgrimage.

  • Easy: Involves minimal walking (0–2.5 miles or 0–4 km per day), mostly short strolls from a motorcoach or transport to a holy site, shrine, or church with plenty of time for sitting and prayer.

  • Moderate: Involves 2.5–5 miles (4–8km) or 10,000 steps per day. Expect standing for long periods, walking on uneven surfaces like cobblestones, and managing stairs or slight inclines at historic shrines or cathedrals.

  • Challenging: Involves 5–10 miles (8–16 km+) or 20,000 steps per day, extended daily movement over mixed, rolling terrain, consecutive full days on your feet, and regular pacing with fewer mid-day breaks.
